Let the sunshine in...

The dog next door set off the morning alarm at 5:35 a.m. Hanna quickly woke up, ran up the stairs to tell Dixie, and the morning was off! We have the Invisible Fence around our property so my sole duty this morning was to stumble down the stairs, put the collars on two very eager and excited dogs, and to throw open the front door! Knowing they would only be a minute or two, I stand at the door to wait for their return. Dixie does at least two laps of the yard and Hanna is right on her heels. The birds are lined up at the bird feeder, one holding a sign saying "you are out of seed", the red squirrel is laying in the seed tray, and the coffee pot is giving out fresh gurgles as it begins the morning routine. Yes, the dogs are at the door...I am ready for them with their bowls of food. Dixie wolfs her down while Hanna is a little daintier. Hanna needs to have several head pats before beginning...Dixie is finished and pacing at the door to go out. Finally, the coffee pot is ready and Hanna is about 1/2 finished with her breakfast. I stand at the door to let Hanna out and notice just how beautiful everything looks in the sunshine. I take my morning coffee out onto the deck to enjoy the sunshine. It is chilly...only about 50 degrees..I look out at the pool...time for another bottle of shock and a back wash I think.. Okay, the birds are really getting upset...no suet, no seed, and what are you doing on the deck while we are trying to eat...I am watching the chickadee bravely sit on the deck railing...waiting...I see the others hovering nearby on the tree limbs...waiting...okay, I get the message.

  1. As I read your post this morning, my wife and I were both enjoying coffee out on the patio. The humidity has been low the past couple of days, so taking advantage of cool mornings with coffee outside. We were laughing at the bird holding up the sign as we are also out of feed! Sounds like you are enjoying your summer--take care of that pool so you can enjoy that as well!

  2. It seems like your morning was very entertaining! I like your descriptions... felt like I was there! Well, 50 degrees sure is chilly. We enjoyed a nice 82 degree day here so no complaints! Was the rest of the day relaxing or just as hectic?

  3. I truly loved the descriptive language that you use in order to help the reader visualized your busy morning. I really enjoy reading every line in your paragraph and got so hooked on it that I wanted to know about how the rest of the day went. Thank you for providing such wonderful and simple examples of quality writing.

  4. Karen, are you quite sure that the red squirrel is yours? I saw mine hitchhiking in your direction after he heard what you served in your feeders. He has cousins upon cousins here in East Kingston that I would gladly send your way if you want more company!

  5. Karen - I can relate to your morning routine, as my black lab will whine to go out if I am not up at 6:00. I have seven birdfeeders, each with a different kind of food to attract a lot of birds. Some of my friends lecture me about only feeding them in the winter, but I have the summers off and can observe them in the lazy days of summer. I sometimes let a few feeders go empty for a few days to encourage them to forage!(I have a certified wildlife habitat from the National Wildlife Federation). Living on a lake, I too, enjoy my morning java lakeside to embrace the day! Thanks for sharing! Marie
